Qiu Guangting of the Five Dynasties wrote in his "Jianmingshu" that "there are ditches with dew visible on the surface, and there are ditches with soil filled on the surface. The one with soil filled on the surface is called Yin ditch, and the one with dew visible on the surface is called Yang ditch."
