Study: Women are more likely to have nightmares and often bring everyday anxieties into their dreams

Having nightmares is an experience that almost everyone has had.

British scientists have found that women are more likely to suffer from nightmares than men.

The Daily Telegraph reported on the 20th that researchers from the University of the West of England spent five years tracking 193 volunteers, including 100 women and 93 men, and asked them to record their dreams.

The survey results show that 19% of men said they had had nightmares recently, while the proportion of women who had this experience was as high as 30%.

Jennifer Parker, a psychology lecturer at the University of the West of England who was involved in the survey, said it was the first study in the world to look at the "nightmare differences" between men and women.

She said: "From the results, there is a clear difference in the frequency of nightmares between men and women - women have more nightmares and women experience nightmares more intensely."

Parker analyzed that women are more likely to bring emotions such as daily anxiety into their dreams. "I think women's dreams are a subconscious way for them to fight against reality." Compared with men, it is more difficult for them to turn off the "switch" of anxiety.

Parker said that follow-up survey results show that nightmares can basically be divided into three categories: being chased or life-threatening, losing loved ones or things, and being in a completely unfamiliar environment.

"What's interesting is that if you read surveys about nightmare content, you'll find that women and men have basically the same nightmares," she said, "but women have them more often. ... They have more unpleasant dreams than men do, and they have more 'encounters' of misery, self-denial and failure in their dreams."
